What to Wear for a Family Photography Session
Tips from a Mesa Family Photographer
One of the most common questions I get as a photographer is: “What should we wear for our session?” And I totally get it! Choosing outfits for the whole family can feel a little overwhelming, but don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. While I provide a super helpful style guide when you book your session, I would love to share some of my best tips when preparing and styling your outfits!
What you wear plays a huge role in how your photos turn out. The goal is to choose outfits that look beautiful on camera, feel like you, and coordinate without being too “matchy-matchy.” Below are some simple tips to help you feel confident and camera-ready.
1. Stick to Neutral, Soft Tones
Neutral and earthy tones like cream, tan, soft blue, sage, olive, blush, and dusty rose always photograph beautifully — especially in our Mesa, Arizona desert light. These colors work well with natural scenery or indoor lifestyle sessions. Avoid super bright neon colors or busy patterns that can distract from your faces and connection.
2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same outfit and colors. Instead, pick a color palette of 2–3 coordinating tones and mix textures and layers. For example:
- Mom in a flowy beige dress
- Dad in a soft olive green button-up and khakis
- Kids in a mix of cream and tan with subtle prints
This keeps everyone cohesive but still lets each personality shine through. Patterned shirts can help add interested, but try not to add too many patterns because they may clash together.
3. Comfort Is Key (Especially for Kids)
When kids are uncomfortable in stiff or itchy clothes, it shows. Choose outfits that are easy to move in and make your little ones feel relaxed and free to play. The more comfortable everyone is, the more natural and joyful your photos will be. This includes clothing that is weather appropriate. The number one reason kids complain during pictures in the Winter and Fall months is from being too cold while dressed clothing not fit for the weather. I know, even in Arizona it can get cold! On the other hand, I wouldn’t recommend a cozy sweater if it’s super warm out either.
4. Dress for the Location and Season
Where your session takes place should influence your outfit choices. Think about your setting and choose outfits that make sense for the space. Consider the colors in the environment and what colors are cohesive without blending in too much. (Ex. If I were taking pictures with a lot of greenery around me, I would probably avoid a green dress.) Soft neutral colors tend to go well with most environments. The location can also help dictate how casual or formal you decide to dress as well. The season may also play a factor in what style of clothing and colors you wear.
5. Keep Shoes and Accessories Simple
Shoes matter more than most people realize! Try to avoid athletic shoes or anything with large logos. Neutral boots, sandals, or barefoot (for in-home or studio sessions) are all great options. Keep jewelry minimal and skip the smartwatches… timeless always wins.
